I know that the GOP wants us to think that Barack Obama is the second coming of Jimmy Carter, but I’m not sure the best way to do it is by having Phil Gramm pronounce that the nation is suffering from a malaise?

I agree. This is particularly rich coming from Gramm. David Corn had a good piece a few months back in Mother Jones — http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2008/07/foreclosure-phil.html — that raises some troubling questions regarding the role Gramm may have played in the current economic meltdown.
Yeah, but to the extent that this captures folks’ attention at the expense of the Jesse Jackson moment (I mean really, could Obama have asked for more?) it could, perversely, be okay for Mac. It comes down, I guess, to what you believe motivates working class voters: a recession, or prejudice?
