Cindy McCain’s tax returns

By Robert Schlesinger

Talking Points Memo notes today that Cindy McCain has vowed to never ever release her tax returns — even if she is the president’s wife.

Set aside for a moment questions about whether other would-be presidential spouses could get away with such a position, and whether it matters that the couple file separately. Here’s what pops into my mind: President’s wives have over the years increasingly had advocacy or policy positions. You don’t have to be a Hillary Clinton — witness Laura Bush’s recent turn in the White House press room.

So would Cindy McCain promise that in exchange for keeping her financial privacy that she would not be involved in any kind of policy advising, advocating, etc. in a McCain White House?
