Dear Robert.
I don’t understand why our wise guys and gals are having so much trouble analyzing the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, or why you are in such a hurry to send Hillary packing.
(Actually, I sorta do understand it: Anne Kornblut and Adam Nagourney need something to write about while they wait for Pennsylvania, Indiana and North Carolina to vote. I myself think they would be better off going to a Ritz Carlton in the Virgin Islands and having a few umbrella drinks on the beach – like that man of the people from Illinois.)
But I digress.
Here is what we all need to know about the Democratic race:
1) The super-delegates will decide it.
2) The super-delegates don’t have to wait until the primaries are over. They can announce their preference at any time, and end this race tomorrow.
3) The super-delegates have not done this. They are waiting. They may be trickling into Barack’s camp, but they’re not moving as a wave – evidence, perhaps, that they still have doubts about the Illinois senator.
4) Therefore, the race is not over.
And Hillary – with tons of bucks, impressive primary victories and almost as many popular votes as Obama – would be nuts to drop out.
It’s also evidence that the big money Clinton backers hold a lot of power within the Democrat’s party.
